The Elusive "Something For The Radio" Loop

Since no one else has, I will shed light on the origin of the sampled loop for Biz Markie's "Something For The Radio" and settle this once and for all.

Back in 1989, I was at home watching a movie, and in typical fashion, I fell asleep. After snoozing for a while, I was suddenly jolted awake by what I heard. It was the drums, and then the bassline for Biz's "Something For The Radio." I was bugging- I rubbed my eyes, hit rewind, and watched it again to make sure.  That discovery put a smile on my face.  I haven't seen this scene since then but I rented the movie from Netflix to peep it again.  In addition to the Biz drums and bassline, it's pretty cool that lyrics from "Planet Rock" are invoked.

As if it needs to be said, Marley is the man.

Oh yeah- the movie was Prince's "Under The Cherry Moon". (Excuse the watermark- I didn't feel like paying for the program.)  Watch the bassist's face.

Nice - I always thought the loop was New Position of Prince's Parade album (it's got the same bassline) but I was wrong. The film is kinda wack but I'm gonna watch it again now...

That's old news for us Prince heads, mayne! But please keep the posts posting.

(you are right Frank, BTW, that segment of the soundtrack is an extension of "New Position")

What up Jay!

The point of the post wasn't that I had discovered some ultra rare loop- shit, it's PRINCE, hardly an underground artist. But still, if you search for the sample on google, you will find a lot of people scratching their heads wondering where Marley got that loop. Now the question remains- where is the kazoo from, or was that played in the studio and looped?

Nice one Stretch!

I have always wondered where that break came from!

Here's one that you or someone else may have an answer for:

Beatnuts - Stone Crazy

Where the hell was that amazingly weird loop from?!!

Peace!

Hahaha sup Jay and Stretch. Yeah, Jay, if I'm watching UTCM with some folks, I always point that out to them. Of course I get the "Oh word? True" (usually said in a "That's great but who cares" tone haha).

Also if folks remember "Improving the Grooving" by 3X Dope, the sample was the Shelia E solo from the "Sign o The Times" movie.

Yeah there are those that would think it not a big deal. And then there are people like me, who thought that discovering something like that was nothing short of a revelation. Am I being overly dramatic?

Good job Stretch. I was a huge Prince fan from the time I heard "I Wanna Be Your Lover" til the "Around The World In A Day" album, then followed him off and on after that, so that one slipped by me. I know you were buggin when you heard it.
