Big Daddy Kane's Birthday, Brooklyn, Circa 1990.

I can't recall how this recording first got in our hands (maybe from Ill?) but this got significant burn on KCR. It's also what put Big Ill The Mack on the map as someone to look out for, not just for sounding next level, but for his not-so-thinly-veiled disses aimed directly at the man of the hour, Big Daddy Kane. You hear him slam the mic on the floor when he is done, and what had been a crowd making noise turned into a group of people dumbfounded with dropped jaws. Can you say awkward?

Before Ill wraps it up last, you get Special Ed, Bizmarkie, Smooth B, Masta Ace, Just-Ice, Lakim Shabbazz, Positive K, Scoob, Scrap, Markey Fresh, Fruikwan, Kane, Jay-Z and Jaz. Al Skratch was apparently not around. Perhaps he was with his "homies"...zzzz.

Kane's Birthday Freestyle with Special Ed, Bizmarkie, Smooth B, Masta Ace, Just-Ice, Lakim Shabbazz, Positive K, Scoob Lover, Scrap Lover, Markey Fresh, Fruikwan, Kane, Jay-Z, Jaz, and Big Ill

wow, i didnt know ill could get down like that...ive never heard this.
what ever happened to scoob? i used to think he was annoying but overall a pretty good mc. this also reminded me of when you guys had big jaz on your hot97 show one sunday and he spit this ill shit, and stretch is all like, to all you aspiring mcs....

I'm shocked at Ill's verbal ability and his audacity to throw shots at the birthday boy....sheesh....Jaz O was the Other Stand out here....most of the other verses besides lakim I've heard before. But a great reminder of the ays when emcees were listened to for the lyrics as witnessed by the crowd's approval at the punchlines and delivery of the performers.

If you have any shows with Sammy B from the Jungle Brothers when he would occasionally spin on 98.7 please post them. Once again thanks my dude you took me on a much needed True School trip.

love jay kickin the same shit he kicked 5 years later on that legendary april night that big L brought him up to your show.. i love jay and all but i also love abusing jay stans when they try to say he is the best of all time by exposing this fact.. to me, thats wack, he has to have had another rhyme 5 years later.. and L straight made him look silly that night..

yo, the guy from boston wasn't that bad. i know he said "scientific" and "perpendicular," but he sounded good.

i don't know if the ladies would really be into lakim's verse, as he suggests. "i leave your pussy looking like the grand canyon." that shit's not pretty.

Jaz-O. yikes!

al sounded a couple years ahead of his time. masta ace's punchlines were kinda corny by comparison--i know, i know, it's from slaughtahouse and it's classic and shit. whatever. i was never quite sure those rhymes were exactly "off-beat," as he says.

anyway, are you sure it's from 1990? kane's fourth album came out in late '91. according to wikipedia, he was born a month before his fourth album came out, so maybe that's what ace is talking about.

The funniest part of the performance was Just-Ice doing his dancehall toast. He must have been drunk. LOL! But seriously there were alot of things you could hear like when the unnamed dude from Boston was first about to start rapping and Positive K just brushed him off. LOL! Then when Ill was ripping Kane and you could hear someone(I think it was Kane) saying One, Two, One, Two. Then Mr. Cee mixing in "Love is what we need". Man that junk was classic. I can't stop listening to this. Since discovering this site I have been like a kid in the candy store. Keep sharing the classics that so many of us from different cities missed the first time out.
